25 Mushroom Companies to Watch in 2025 (Part 4)

For the third consecutive year, I’ve compiled a list of mushroom companies to watch for the year. To be clear, there are so, so many mushroom entrepreneurs, startups and established giants that should be on this list - The selection criteria was mainly focused on trying to avoid ‘repeat companies’ from previous years while shining a light on lesser publicized people and projects that are doing impactful work. There were compa nies from 12 countries featured, and the full list is forthcoming in an article.

16. Myceliumatters is a Los Angeles based mushroom company that connects people to the myco community through events and workshops - they're also the founders of the El Paso Fungi Fest, Long Beach Mushroom Festival, and the Texas Mushroom Conference in Austin. They recently announced their LA Wildfire Remediation initiative, which embraces the strategic use of mushrooms to help support ecosystem recovery.

17. Real Mushrooms is one of the most prolific functional mushroom companies globally, with over 40 years of experience behind them. They lean into longstanding traditions around medicinal mushroom use, and exist to fill the gap in the market that exists due to the ongoing issue around mycelium and oats being mislabeled as 'mushroom supplements' - Real Mushrooms uses 100% mushrooms in their supplements, and maintains multigenerational relationships with their farmers in China, which is the cradle of the medicinal mushroom industry.

18. mycena advocates for open-source data sharing
and methodological transparency around fungal diversity and genome sequencing - Founded by esteemed citizen mycologists Mandie Quark and Alan Rockefeller , they lead trips to remote and biodiverse areas of the world and document the fungal diversity there while producing high quality multimedia around the experiences.

19. Mushroom World Singapore is a multinational mushroom farm and education center that has a presence in Singapore, Thailand, and China. Many mushroom companies are not able to transparently provide traceability to where their mushrooms were grown; this is an issue in the industry, as mushroom supplements or even mushrooms themselves may be passed through several middlemen before reaching the consumer - Mushroom World was founded to address this gap and to provide a high quality, transparent mushroom supply and also educational programs.

20. Minnesota Nice Ethnobotanicals is one of the leading purveyors of Amanita muscaria in North America, as well as numerous other functional mushroom and ethnobotanical products. They craft high quality and ethically sourced supplements, and offer a rare public face to an Amanita muscaria company whereas the team behind many of these types of products are not always publicly visible.

Some key trends identified here: Many of the successful companies in the mushroom space first identify a 'gap in the market', and then work towards effectively filling that gap.

Mycotourism continues to boom, with new projects launching every few months to take people to experience and document the 'Funga' of various arts of the world - this is an especially timely emerging industry, as much traditional knowledge around mushrooms as well as the ecosystems that are required for them to thrive are in danger of being erased by global development and acculturation.

Say tuned for Part 5 in next week’s newsletter

THE LOST MUTI

Cullen Clark of South Africa is doing game changing research into the lost traditions of mushroom use across South Africa. He’s uncovered some remarkable evidence, and is embarking on a journey back into the field to continue the research he’s been largely self-funding for the last 5 years.

This is the best trailer you’ll watch today. Here’s the link to the Kickstarter, I’m chipping in and I encourage you to do so as well

Cullen and I did a podcast in 2024 where he does a deep dive into his research - and beyond citizen mycology, this research has been published in multiple peer-reviewed academic journals and has caught the attention of global press for good reason

Y’all, we did it. We launched a world class, artisanal mushroom chocolate bar. We’re getting rave reviews from chocolate lovers - please try it for yourself and tap in with me.

We’ve already been reviewed by some pretty awesome outlets such as Out Front Magazine and mentioned in GreenState, Double Blind, Lucid News and more.

Grab a few bars and tag me in any photos you take! Subscriptions are live too, we just dialed in our first subscription order this week - woohoo!

Here are some specs on the mushroom content in the chocolate:

1 gram of Cordyceps extracts containing 30% Polysaccharides, 1% Cordycepin, and 0.5% Adenosine

– 1 gram of Reishi extracts containing 10% Triterpenes and 20% Polysaccharides

– 1 gram of Lion’s Mane extracts containing 30% polysaccharides

– 1 gram of Chaga extracts containing 30% Polysaccharides and 3% Triterpenes.

 And the chocolate itself:

The cacao is sourced from a cooperative founded to promote cacao as an alternative income source for local farmers in the area.  This region has previously been known for its mining practices and mono-culture farming techniques, which have had devastating consequences on the environment and have left the locals in severe poverty.  The cooperative has helped support the farmers with better wages and bring biodiversity back to the region.
