Howdy Mycopreneurs,
Last week we hosted our ‘Magic Mushroom Edible Deep Dive’ with Chris Pauli of Tryptomics Lab. Due to popular demand, I’m sharing some of the key points that came up during the session relevant to analytical testing of over 100 different unique products labeled as ‘Magic Mushroom’ edibles. The full recording and a highlight video from the session are linked here as well.
This presentation was hosted during our weekly Mycopreneur Incubator, a virtual and occasionally in-person forum for accelerating mushroom entrepreneurs that I’ve been hosting consistently since August of 2024 and sporadically since January of 2022. Invites to the Mycopreneur Incubator go out through this newsletter.
In addition to analytical testing data and a market overview, this session of the incubator focused on guardrails currently in place for self-regulation of the underground market. While studies like the recent Oregon State University study and adverse incidents like the Diamond Shruumz fiasco last summer tend to be amplified in the media and attract the attention of authorities, the sensible and proactive safety measures that are already in place to mitigate potential harms and adulterated products in the unregulated market tend to get very little if any attention outside of psychonaut circles. Here are 4 key components in place to ensure rigorous standardization, safety, and public education around the unregulated mushroom market.

Mountain Dew and Gatorade flavored ‘mushroom edibles’
Analytical Testing Labs and At Home Test Kits: Testing labs like Tryptomics, Friday Ventures, Hyphae Labs and others test mushroom edible products with HPLC (High-performance Liquid Chromatography) and other measures to verify active compounds, minor alkaloids, microbial levels, and other data to tell you exactly what is in a given sample or product.
Third Party Labeling Verification: Consumer protection groups like PsiloSafe and Shroomski provide third party certification to ensure that products have been tested and are accurately labeled and dosed.
Psychedelic Communities: There are over 150 psychedelic communities across the United States and many more internationally, an index of which can be found on the Global Psychedelic Society website. Beyond this, there are at least 500 psychedelic churches in the United States that provide a degree of community and educational support around products and sourcing - for example, Zide Door in Oakland has over 120,000 members and provides access to mushrooms and mushroom edibles.
Harm Reduction Resources: Resources like Fireside Project and Entheo.ai offer peer support and education
This is an extremely abbreviated list of the current guardrails in place to help ensure legitimacy and safety in navigating the unregulated mushroom edibles market.
