“Culture eats strategy for breakfast”

This quote is often attributed to management consultant Peter Drucker, and I take it to mean that a community, company, or country culture is the beating heart of it’s operation. As such, if you want to understand the opportunities that exist in an emergent space such as the ‘Shroom Boom’, look at the culture underpinning it. Find where people are gathering of their own accord, and that’s where the culture is.

This is a huge piece that virtually every single one of the highly capitalized ‘psychedelic renaissance’ biotech companies attempting to patent crystalline polymorph psilocybin and related concepts have gotten wrong. Maybe on paper and in the clinic it looks like a good idea to pour a billion dollars into operationalizing a psilocybin company that ignores deeply entrenched and rapidly growing cultural trends around psilocybin containing mushrooms, but in reality these companies are down 90% over the last 5 years because they never bothered to look at the cultural piece around ‘psilocybin’. I’ve said it for years, put a psychonaut on your board and save yourself a world of trouble.

An interesting cultural trend I’ve noticed is psilocybin mushrooms being referenced in rap lyrics by superstar rappers. I was listening to the new Larry June and 2 Chainz record ‘Life Is Beautiful’ this week when I heard cultural icon 2 Chainz caught this lyric on the track ‘Generation’:

“Rappin', that's my therapy, eat mushrooms like they jellybeans"

Even over a decade ago, Lil Wayne was rapping

“See, them shroomies keep me up so I ain't got no worries” on the track ‘No Worries’.

Grammy winning R&B artist JhenĂ© Aiko even has a song called ‘Psilocybin (Love In Full Effect)’.

Wiz Khalifa shared that he combined one of his ‘favorite pastimes’ - being on mushrooms - with America’s favorite pastime while throwing out the ceremonial first pitch at the Pirates game “stoned af” last year. There’s definitely a good joke in here re: being on mushrooms and throwing a ceremonial first pitch.

The LA Times wrote an article about it titled ‘Wiz Khalifa Does Shrooms, Throws Out First Pitch at Pirates Game’

Meek Mill has spoken publicly in interviews about how eating mushrooms made him smarter.

I’m sure there are many more examples, but hearing raps biggest stars casually referring to their affinity for psilocybin mushrooms surely has not gone unnoticed by the culture - and culture eats strategy for breakfast.

Hungary For Mushrooms

There’s a great joke in here somewhere but I haven’t quite landed on it it yet: Mushrooms, Hungary / Hungry, Curing Diabetes. I’m going to have to sit on this one but it feels like a perfect tee up for wholesome humor.

“I used to be hungry for sugary snacks, but a study in Hungary taught me to be hungry for mushrooms” - see what I mean, it lacks the punch needed to be a good joke currently, but the build blocks of a humorous quip are all there.

Some frames from our sponsors: It’s no secret that I Take Mycroboost functional mushroom products everywhere I go. Jumping on an international flight or going to a conference or festival requires a tremendous amount of energy and focus to do properly. Life in general requires these attributes; mushrooms help sustain and amplify energy and focus. So of course I took them with me to the beach last weekend while celebrating my son getting his passport. Check out the killer we found spot below. I hate to admit this, but the nightly room rate was cheaper than the last roadside Motel 6 I stayed in in New Jersey. This is your sign to grab some Mycroboost mushroom products and book a vacation in a low-key beach town. Or a sabbatical. Or shit, just retire early and start a new life. You’ll figure it out. “The path is made by walking”.

What y’all know about Tremella Mushrooms?

I value them for their moisturizing and skin repairing qualities among other functional benefits - there’s a reason they’re one of the most popular mushrooms in Asia, where skincare routines are living in the 25th century. That’s why I cop my Tremella Extracts from Real Mushrooms and bring those everywhere I go as well.

In other news, the functional mushroom chocolate brand ‘Mycoday’ that I launched was profiled in Nutraceutical Business Review this week. NBR is a global B2B nutraceutical industry publication, and it’s awesome to see our little mushroom chocolate brand getting press alongside worldwide power players in the nutraceutical space.

Not that I had to google this, but nutraceutical means “A food or food product that is believed to provide health or medical benefits”.

Tap in and grab some functional mushroom chocolate from us:

I was featured in a Double Blind Magazine article by prolific drug journalist Mattha Busby this week in an article about Instagram’s targeting of the psychedelic content creators for censorship - I know many of you reading this have experienced this personally.

Read the full article linked here, though it is gated behind a paywall. I paid $5 for the month to read an article I provided quotes and context for, but this is not that unusual these days. Plus, I like Double Blind and value what they do as independent journalists, especially in regards to the psychedelic specific content.

There’s so much going on these days in the mushroom and psychedelic spaces, and so much noise. Come to the Incubator and connect with a community of people who are actively defining the culture underpinning the aforementioned spaces, because at the end of the day:

Culture eats strategy for breakfast.
